Before appearing in IBPS RRB PO Prelims exam, you should go through below mention tips and strategy for how to attempt your exam:
1. Effective Time Management Strategy:
As you all know, there is a composite time of 45 minutes for both sections. You should not spend too much time on any question, it will indirectly affect the overall attempt of your exam. Keeping in mind your stronger areas and select the questions according to it. Don't Try to solve each and every question.
2. Speed and Accuracy:
Speed and accuracy are other important variables to clear your exam. You will have to maintain proper speed from beginning to till end along with 100% accuracy.
3. Negative Marking:
As I told you above, during your exam, you will have to maintain proper speed along with 100% accuracy because there is a negative marking of 1/4 mark per question for each wrong answer. So, accuracy plays an important role to clear your exam.
4. Each candidate must have to score minimum sectional cut-off for each section and minimum total score to clear overall cut-off in Prelims exam to be shortlisted for Mains Exam.
5. And remember one thing is in mind, prelims exam is just qualifying in nature. The marks you score in this phase won’t be included in the final merit list.
6. Tips for Reasoning Section:
- 40 questions are asked in this section. And you should try to finish this section within 20-22 minutes, so you have enough time to finish another section.
- Try to attempt these scoring topics first in this section:
a) Inequality
b) Syllogism
c) Coding-Decoding
d) Alpha-numeric series
e) Direction Sense
f) Other miscellaneous question etc.
g) Try to attempt puzzles in last, after attempting these above-mentioned topics.
h) If you attempt puzzles in starting and in case you are not able to solve the puzzle within the time limit, it will definitely decrease your sectional attempt.

7. Tips for Numerical Ability:
- 40 questions are asked in this section also. And you should try to finish this section within 23-25 minutes, so you have enough time to solve calculative questions.
- Try to attempt these scoring topics first in this section:
a) Simplification/Approximation
b) Number Series
c) Quadratic Equations
d) Data Interpretation (based on average, ratio and percentage questions)
e) After attempting these topics, you can move on to miscellaneous topics, if you have time.
- Try to attempt 27-30+ questions in this section.
8. And, always attempt easier and your stronger topics first in each section.
9. Do’s and Don’t for IBPS RRB PO Prelims Exam:
- Don’t spend more than 1 minute on any question. If you have little doubt on any question, it would be advisable to move on to the next question.
- Do read question properly first.
- Don’t take it on ego, when you puzzle in any question and don’t waste too much time on any question.
- Don’t do any guesswork in the exam.
- You should try to attempt a mock test at the same time when it is time for your exam.
- Don’t attempt mock test one day before your exam.
- Be prepared and ready for surprises in the exam.
- And, don’t panic when your exam is going to start. Stay calm and start with your stronger section, in which are more confident. It boosts your confidence level during the exam and you are able to give your best in your exam.
10. Some General Tips for the exam:
Night before exam
- Eat the right food.
- Don’t study on the first night before your exam.
- Don’t use any social sites like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc.
- Take proper 7-8 hours of sleep.
On Exam Day
- Get up early in the morning after taking proper sleep.
- Do yoga and exercises. And, spend some time with your family members in the morning.
- You should worship your god.
- Have light breakfast and eat fruits.
- Feeling positive and confident.
- Reach exam centre before reporting time.
- Don’t revise any topic outside the exam centre because usually, candidates revise outside the exam centre.
- Don’t forget to take a printout of admit card with recent passport size photograph affixed on it and identity proof (original + photocopy).
